Assessing the Safety of Gray Steak
While color alone isn’t a reliable indicator of spoilage, there are several ways to determine if your steak is still safe to eat:
1. Smell Test
- Fresh Steak: Has a mild, slightly metallic smell.
- Spoiled Steak: Gives off a sour, ammonia-like, or rancid odor.
2. Texture Check
- Fresh Steak: Feels firm and slightly moist.
- Spoiled Steak: Develops a slimy, sticky, or tacky texture, which indicates bacterial growth.
3. Expiration Date
- Always check the use-by date. Even if the steak looks okay, consuming it past this date increases the risk of foodborne illness.
4. Visual Inspection
- Look for additional signs of spoilage, such as green or iridescent patches. These are definite red flags.
