“Leona, it’s Nora. You need to come over right away. I found something disturbing in my trash.”
Leona’s tone turned serious as I described what I’d found. “Don’t touch anything. I’m on my way. Stay inside with the kids.”
After I hung up, the recent neighborhood break-ins crossed my mind. They involved chemicals to weaken locks and a clean-up of evidence. A terrifying thought gripped me—my home could be next.
“What’s wrong, Mom?” Kai asked, sensing my worry.
“It’s nothing,” I lied, forcing a smile. “Let’s eat.”
As we sat down to dinner, a knock on the door made my heart race. I exhaled with relief when I saw Leona through the peephole.
“Stay here and finish your food,” I told the kids before stepping outside to meet her. I told Leona about Ravi’s note, his strange behavior, and what I found. She listened carefully, her eyes scanning the surroundings.
“You did the right thing,” she said. “I’ll take a closer look and have it analyzed. In the meantime, I recommend getting security cameras. We’ll have officers patrol the area tonight.”
